Read a PDF on a Kobo
Last updated 10 October 2026
A Kobo eReader opens PDFs, but it shows them as fixed pages that you zoom and pan. To read a PDF like a book, convert it to EPUB in Finepress, then copy the EPUB to the Kobo over USB. Your PDF is not uploaded to Finepress.
Can a Kobo open a PDF?
Yes. Kobo lists PDF among the files its eReaders read. A PDF keeps its printed pages, though, and Kobo's help lists what you cannot do in one:
- select text or add a highlight
- look up words in the dictionary
- change the text size or style
You can zoom into part of a page and pan around it, or turn the PDF to landscape for a wider view. An EPUB does not have these limits on a Kobo, because its text flows to fit the screen.

How do I convert the PDF to EPUB?
Add the PDF to Finepress, wait for it to convert, then download the EPUB from the book's details.
- Open Finepress. You do not need an account or an install.
- Press Add a book and choose the PDF, or drop the file anywhere on the page.
- Wait while Finepress reads the pages. It removes running headers, footers and page numbers, puts columns in reading order, and rebuilds paragraphs, headings and chapters. A scanned PDF is read with OCR first.
- Press Open and look through the book.
- Open the book's details on the shelf and press Download EPUB.
How do I copy the EPUB to my Kobo?
Connect the Kobo to your computer with its USB cable and drag the EPUB onto the Kobo's drive.
- Turn on the Kobo and connect it to your computer with the USB cable.
- On the Kobo, tap Connect when it says it has detected a computer.
- On the computer, find the drive named KOBOeReader and drag the EPUB onto it.
- Eject the KOBOeReader drive, then unplug the cable. The Kobo shows "Importing content".
- On the Kobo's Home screen, tap My Books and open the book.
A book copied this way appears only on that Kobo, not on your other Kobo devices or apps. Kobo's help also describes adding books through Google Drive or Dropbox on some models. These steps follow Kobo's guide to adding PDF and EPUB files with a computer, checked on 10 October 2026.
If you keep your books in Calibre, add the EPUB there and let Calibre send it to the Kobo. Finepress and Calibre covers using the two together.
What about KOReader?
KOReader is a reader app that runs on Kobo, Kindle and other e-readers. If you already use it, it can reflow a PDF on the device, so you may not need to convert first.
Its project page says scanned PDF and DjVu documents can be reflowed with its built-in K2pdfopt library (checked on 10 October 2026). Finepress instead makes an EPUB file, which also opens in Kobo's own reader and in other EPUB readers.
Common questions
Does Finepress make KEPUB files?
No. Finepress writes a plain EPUB 3 file, and Kobo eReaders read EPUB. If you want Kobo's KEPUB format, Calibre can write it (its changelog lists KEPUB Output), and Kepubify converts an EPUB to KEPUB. Both checked on 10 October 2026.
Will the EPUB show up on my other Kobo devices?
Not when you copy it over USB. Kobo's help says a book added that way appears only on the device you copied it to.
Can I keep marks on the Kobo?
Marks you make in Finepress stay in Finepress. They are not written into the EPUB, so the Kobo does not show them. You can export them as Markdown or JSON.
Is Finepress made by Kobo?
No. Finepress is not connected to Rakuten Kobo, and it does not send books to a Kobo for you.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The PDF is converted in your browser. The guide to converting without uploading lists what does leave your device.
Finepress is free to use and needs no account. Your PDF is converted in your browser.
