Finepress and Calibre for PDF to EPUB

Last updated 9 October 2026

Both convert a PDF to EPUB on your own device, and both are free for that. Finepress runs in a browser and does one job: it rebuilds a PDF, including a scanned one, as a book you can read. Calibre is a desktop app that manages a whole ebook library. For organising many books, converting between many formats, sending books to an e-reader and adding plugins, Calibre is the better tool.

Which one should I use?

Use Finepress for a scanned or multi-column PDF, or when you cannot install software. Use Calibre to manage a library, to make formats other than EPUB, or to send books to an e-reader.

What does Calibre's manual say about PDF?

It says plainly that "PDF documents are one of the worst formats to convert from." It lists complex, multi-column and image-based documents as not supported, and it suggests Search & replace for removing headers and footers.

Finepress reads columns in order, removes running headers and footers, and runs OCR on scans. Some PDFs still need cleanup in both tools. Finepress flattens tables into text, does not recover equations as mathematics, and can lose its way on a complex layout such as a magazine page.

Can I use Finepress and Calibre together?

Yes. Convert the PDF in Finepress, open the book's details on the shelf and press Download EPUB, then add that EPUB to Calibre. From there Calibre can send it to an e-reader or convert it to another format.

Common questions

Does Finepress give a better EPUB than Calibre for every PDF?

No. On a one-column text PDF, both can give a readable EPUB. The differences show on scans, on pages set in columns, and on pages with running headers and page numbers.

Does either one upload my PDF?

No. Calibre converts on your computer and Finepress converts in your browser.

Can Finepress make MOBI or AZW3 files?

No. Finepress writes EPUB only. Calibre can convert that EPUB to other formats.

Can Calibre run OCR on a scanned PDF?

Its manual says image-based documents are not supported. If a scan already has OCR text behind the page pictures, Calibre uses that text. See convert a scanned PDF to EPUB.
