Read a PDF on a Boox

Last updated 12 October 2026

A Boox opens PDFs in its own reader, NeoReader, which can reflow a PDF and has a mode for pages set in columns. For many PDFs that is enough. When it is not, convert the PDF to EPUB in Finepress and send the EPUB to the Boox with BOOXDrop. Your PDF is not uploaded to Finepress.

Can a Boox reflow a PDF?

Yes. Boox's help for PDF and similar files says you can choose different modes or reflow for a better reading experience. It lists these options:

Boox's blog describes NeoReader's navigation modes as reflowing files by adjusting text direction, spacing and alignment. Boox's help also says you may need to try different modes or adjust the settings to find what suits a document. Menu names can differ between firmware versions.

When is the Boox's own reflow enough?

Try it first. If the text reads in the right order and at a size you like, you do not need to convert the PDF.

When does an EPUB help?

When you want running headers and page numbers gone from the text, the book in more than one reader app, or your marks in one place.

How do I convert the PDF to EPUB?

Add the PDF to Finepress, wait for it to convert, then download the EPUB from the book's details.

  1. Open Finepress. You do not need an account or an install.
  2. Press Add a book and choose the PDF, or drop the file anywhere on the page.
  3. Wait while Finepress reads the pages. It removes running headers, footers and page numbers, puts columns in reading order, and rebuilds paragraphs, headings and chapters. A scanned PDF is read with OCR first.
  4. Press Open and look through the book.
  5. Open the book's details on the shelf and press Download EPUB.

If the PDF is a scan, Convert a scanned PDF to EPUB explains how Finepress reads it.

How do I send the EPUB to my Boox?

Use BOOXDrop, the transfer app on the Boox. Boox's help recommends it for sending files from a computer.

  1. Connect the Boox and your computer to the same network.
  2. On the Boox, open the BOOXDrop app. It shows an address.
  3. Type that address into your computer's browser.
  4. On that page, send the EPUB to the Boox.
  5. On the Boox, find the file in the Receive tab of BOOXDrop, and open it.

Boox's help also describes its send2boox website, where you sign in to your Boox account and send files through Boox's server, and transfers from a phone or from cloud storage. These steps follow Boox's guide Transfer with Your Computer, checked on 12 October 2026.

Common questions

Can NeoReader open the EPUB Finepress makes?

Yes. Boox says NeoReader supports up to 20 ebook formats, including PDF and EPUB. Finepress writes a plain EPUB 3 file.

Which reads a scanned PDF better, the Boox or Finepress?

It depends on the scan and its language. Boox's offline OCR covers more than 30 languages. Finepress's OCR reads English and simplified Chinese, and it builds an EPUB you can read anywhere. Try the Boox first for other languages.

Can I see my Finepress marks in NeoReader?

No. Marks you make in Finepress are not written into the EPUB, so NeoReader does not show them. You can export them as Markdown or JSON.

Is Finepress made by Boox?

No. Finepress is not connected to Onyx or Boox, and it does not send books to a Boox for you.

Is my PDF uploaded?

Not to Finepress. The PDF is converted in your browser. If you use send2boox, the EPUB goes through Boox's server. The guide to converting without uploading lists what Finepress itself sends.

Finepress is free to use and needs no account. Your PDF is converted in your browser.
