Convert a DRM-free MOBI or AZW3 file to EPUB
Last updated 10 October 2026
Finepress turns a DRM-free Kindle file (MOBI, AZW or AZW3) into an EPUB in your browser, then opens it as a book on your shelf. The file is not uploaded. A Kindle book locked to an Amazon account is refused, and Finepress does not unlock it.
How do I convert a MOBI or AZW3 file to EPUB?
Add the file to Finepress. It becomes an EPUB on your shelf, and you can download that EPUB.
- Open Finepress. You do not need an account or an install.
- Press Add a book and choose the file, or drop it anywhere on the page. A line above the shelf says "Reading" and the file name while it converts.
- The book opens in the reader. If you added several files at once, they are added to the shelf one by one instead.
- To save the EPUB, open the book's details on the shelf and press Download EPUB.
Which Kindle files work?
DRM-free files in the MOBI and KF8 formats.
- .mobi and .prc: Mobipocket and MOBI books
- .azw3: KF8 books
- .azw: when the file has no DRM
Some files hold both an older MOBI version and a KF8 version of the same book. Finepress reads the KF8 version, the newer of the two.
Which Kindle files do not work?
KFX and Topaz files, and any Kindle book locked with DRM.
- KFX and Topaz are not supported. Finepress says: "This is not a Kindle file Finepress can read. It reads MOBI and AZW3 books; KFX and older Topaz books are not supported."
- A book locked to an Amazon account is refused. Finepress says: "This Kindle book is locked to an Amazon account, and Finepress does not unlock books. Kindle books without DRM open here."
- An EPUB locked by Adobe, Kobo, Apple or Readium LCP is refused in the same way. An EPUB whose only protection is font obfuscation opens.
Finepress never removes copy protection, and a refused file is not added to the shelf. A book you bought without DRM, or one from a source that publishes DRM-free files, converts.
What happens to the book?
It becomes an EPUB 3 book on your shelf, and Finepress keeps that EPUB rather than the Kindle file.
- The text, images and cover carry over, and links inside the book still work.
- The book's own table of contents becomes the Contents list. A book without one gets an entry for each section.
- You can read it, make marks and notes, and search it like any other book on the shelf.
- Download EPUB in the book's details saves the EPUB file.
The conversion runs in your browser. The part of Finepress that reads Kindle files downloads only when you add one, so converting a PDF does not load it.
Can Finepress convert TXT files too?
Yes. A .txt file becomes an EPUB on the way in, the same way a Kindle file does.
- The encoding is detected: UTF-8, UTF-16, GB18030, Big5, Shift_JIS or EUC-KR.
- Chapters are found from headings such as "Chapter 3" or "第三章".
- A file with no headings is split into sections of similar length.
- For a Project Gutenberg text, the header and licence are cut off, and the title and author are read from the header.
Common questions
Can Finepress convert a Kindle book I bought from Amazon?
Only if the file has no DRM. A Kindle book locked to an Amazon account is refused, and Finepress does not remove DRM.
Can Finepress turn an EPUB into MOBI or AZW3?
No. Finepress writes EPUB only. Calibre can convert an EPUB to other formats.
Is my Kindle file uploaded?
No. The file is read and converted in your browser, and the EPUB is stored in your browser's storage. The guide to converting without uploading lists what does leave your device.
Can I read the EPUB on a Kindle?
Yes. Download the EPUB and send it with Amazon's Send to Kindle, which accepts EPUB. See Read a PDF on your Kindle for the steps.
